Public Health Milestones: A Celebration Event, Maldives

Remarks by Dr Catharina Boehme, Officer-in-Charge, WHO South-East Asia

10 December 2025

His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu

Honorable Minister of Health Mr Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim

Distinguished colleagues and the people of Maldives

Warm greetings from the World Health Organization

Today marks a truly historic moment; not only for the Maldives, but for global public health. It is my great honor to extend heartfelt congratulations to President Muizzu and the Government of Maldives for becoming the first country in the world to achieve the Triple Elimination of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV, Syphilis, and Hepatitis B.

This unprecedented milestone speaks to the Maldives’ unwavering commitment to protecting mothers and children, strengthening surveillance systems, integrating service delivery, and ensuring that no island or community is left behind. It stands as a powerful example of what is possible through sustained political leadership, dedicated health workers, and strong community engagement.

I would also like to congratulate the Government on the introduction of a new vaccine to its National EPI schedule, another important investment in safeguarding future generations. Each new vaccine introduced is a step toward ensuring every child grows up healthier, safer, and with greater opportunity.

Today also marks a transformative moment with the launch of the National Digital Health Blueprint under the Maldives 2.0 initiative. This Blueprint lays out a bold and forward-looking vision for a unified, person-centered digital health ecosystem; one that improves continuity of care, enhances data quality, and brings the country closer to paperless and seamless health services.

By establishing these core foundations, the Maldives is positioning itself to leapfrog toward global best practices and strengthen its pathway to Universal Health Coverage.

Your achievements reflect innovation, determination, and a deep commitment to the health and well-being of everyone, everywhere. WHO is proud to stand beside you as a trusted partner on this journey.

I congratulate you once again and wish you continued success as you build a healthier, more resilient, and more equitable future for all.

Thank you.
